Midnight Chunk 1

Topic of covering up Savannah's unsavory bits. We all know that this whole book is some journalist writing about a murder that occurred in Savannah and really shook up the place so the topic of murder/death really isn't new. The rub is that because the people of Savannah are so secretive or just don't want a bad reputation attached to their precious money, many murders are covered up. It almost reminds me of how English nobles would cover up deaths by more incriminating diseases (usually STDs) by things like "consumption" or the French Pox which in itself is almost a euphemism. Anyway, Savannah's elite are shown to not be strangers to covering their tracks with bogus stories to uphold their name and status. When Williams says "[It's] not possible... , they keep it very prim and proper." (Berendt, 12)it only adds more mystery to the different layers of Savannah's population.
